Benjamin Palmer, the Windsor Locks High School senior class president who has been a runner and soccer player at the high school for four years, said he started the petition titled “Bring Back Ms. Patty” to provide a platform for his classmates to express their support for Patricia Taylor, who had been an athletic trainer at the school for seven years, according to the petition. “Gaining over 1,000 signatures in less than 24 hours, it’s turned into a tribute to a woman who gave so much without ever asking for recognition,” Palmer wrote in an email. “Always riding around in her white golf cart, Ms. Patty worked long hours to make sure we were safe, responsible and healthy athletes. “While we may not know the circumstances of her departure, we do know that her kindness, compassion, and service to others will be a long-lived legacy at Windsor Locks High School and all the schools she served.” The petition called Taylor “an unsung hero” and that her dismissal “has distressed many students, for whom she served as an influence, mentor and motivator. “By signing this petition, we request the school administration to reconsider their decision, reinstating her and recognizing her contribution to the development of our school’s athletic department.” Windsor Locks Superintendent of Schools Shawn Parkhurst said in an email that he could not comment on the situation because it was a “confidential personnel matter.” One supporter wrote on the petition: “The care, concern, and follow up Miss Patty showed for our son following a concussion was remarkable. Elon Musk, the world's richest person and one of Donald Trump's closest allies, met with US lawmakers Thursday on his plans for overseeing radical government spending cuts under the incoming administration. President-elect Trump rewarded the Tesla, X and SpaceX chief for his support during the White House campaign by naming him head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, along with another wealthy ally, Vivek Ramaswamy. Although the office, dubbed DOGE, has a purely advisory role, Musk's star power and intense influence in Trump's inner circle bring political clout. Mr Chan and other officials first met Director of Drainage Services Ringo Mok, together with directorate staff, and were briefed on the department's drainage improvement works in Hong Kong. The department is carrying out seven drainage improvement works projects, covering Wong Tai Sin, Hong Kong Island East and other areas hit by severe floods in the past. Besides adopting parallel tendering, the department is also striving to shorten the duration of engineering design, procurement and construction processes, in order to complete the improvements as soon as possible. In response to the higher occurrence of extreme weather conditions in recent years, the department is committed to strengthening its Emergency Control Centre and emergency response teams, and to applying innovative technologies to enhance work safety and efficacy. For instance, the deployment of a desilting robot, “River Ranger”, in emergency clearance works, is aimed at restoring communities to normality within the shortest period of time. In addition, an underground drainage inspection robot known as “Tumbler Inspection Ball”, and other crawler-type survey robots, are used to conduct surveying works to determine the status of underground pipelines. As voting day approached, the question was posed as a challenge — a friend even said, “If you are covering the polls, you should know the outcome, right?” I had some unhelpful stock replies: “Let’s wait and see” or “It is a tough fight”. None of this is surprising, especially since TV journalists often wade into the tricky waters of election forecasting. When people pose this question, the (wrong) assumption is that journalists are not the chroniclers, but architects of history. But with experience, I have learned to refrain from getting too entangled in the arithmetic of polls or predicting outcomes; that unenviable job is best left to political pundits. A seasoned journalist once told me, “In political journalism, the wind blows where it pleases. Our job is just to catch its scent.” While we managed to catch the scent — a broad spectrum of people, including women in rural areas, seemed to favour the Mahayuti alliance — predicting the scale of victory was trickier.
