A landscape gardener charged with possession of almost €500,000 of cocaine played a “significant role” in transporting drugs for the “Keane” organised crime gang in Limerick, a court heard on Monday. Stephen McNamara, (43), with an address at Woodcock Hill, Meelick, Co Clare, appeared before Limerick District Court, charged with one count of possession of cocaine for sale or supply. Advertisement The drugs were valued at €490,000, gardaí told the court. Detective Garda Brendan McSweeney, Henry Street Garda Station, told the court he arrested Mr McNamara at 5:53pm last Friday, after searching the accused’s car, a black BMW, and discovering seven parcels of suspected cocaine inside the vehicle. Detective Garda McSweeney alleged that Mr McNamara admitted to gardaí, following his arrest, that he had known that he was transporting what he believed to be cocaine. Objecting to bail, Det Gda McSweeney alleged that Mr McNamara had played a “significant role for the Keane organised crime group” and that the accused had been in contact with “leading members” of the gang. Advertisement The court heard Mr McNamara has ongoing drug addiction issues. Detective Garda McSweeney alleged the accused was “caught red-handed” with a suspected “large volume” of cocaine. The garda witness said he believed Mr McNamara would continue to allegedly play a “significant role in the logistics and transportation of cocaine in the city” if he was granted bail. Under questioning from Mr McNamara’s solicitor Sarah Ryan, Det Gda McSweeney agreed the accused was “cooperative” “courteous” and “respectful” to gardaí following his arrest. Advertisement Ms Ryan put it to the garda witness that Mr McNamara was running a “landscaping business” and was “not doing well financially”. Detective Garda McSweeney said he was not aware of any landscaping business and said Mr McNamara “had €2,000 in cash in his possession in his socks” and that he was driving a €35,000 vehicle” when he was arrested. “He (Mr McNamara) sold an Audi for €18,000 last year is is paying €400pm on finance for his (current) vehicle,” the garda added. Ms Ryan said the accused had previously attended at a drug-treatment facility and that he was impacted by two recent bereavements. Advertisement Sergeant Sean Murray, prosecuting, alleged that the accused would, in the opinion of the gardaí, “continue to commit scheduled offences to feed a (drug) habit and assist a known organised crime gang that we know he associates with”. Judge Patricia Harney said she was granting Mr McNamara bail on a number of conditions, including that he lodge €500 with the court, that he be of good behaviour while on bail, that he reside at his home address only, and notify Gardai of any change in his address, and that he sign on daily at Henry Street Garda Station. The judge also ordered that Mr McNamara have “no contact whatsoever, with Christy Keane” as requested by gardaí. “No contact means - no contact - including by means of third party contact, by mobile phone, or on social media,” the judge said. Advertisement The judge also ordered Mr McNamara “stay out of the Singland area of Limerick" as requested by gardaí. The accused was also ordered to “surrender his passport”, provide gardaí with a contact number that is to be charged and in credit at all times, “and to remain alcohol and drug-free while in public”. Ireland Best man escapes jail after causing groom’s death... Read More Sergeant Murray said gardaí were awaiting further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions. Mr McNamara, who was supported in court by family members lodged the €500 bail bond that was brought to the court by a relative. He was remanded on bail to appear before Limerick District Court again on March 12th, 2025. A second man, Christy Keane, 63, a native of St Mary’s Park, who was also arrested last Friday as part of the drugs probe, was “released without charge pending further investigations”, a garda spokeswoman said.Musk wants to slash US government spending by a third, and Ramaswamy wants to cut 75% of the federal workforce. Can they? For months, Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, has been pushing for a department to slash United States government spending. On November 12, President-elect Donald Trump made his wish come true and announced that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and failed Republican presidential candidate, would lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE appears to be an outside advisory department that will work in conjunction with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), a White House office in charge of helping the sitting president craft budget proposals to bring to Congress. Musk gave the department official government credentials on X, the social media platform he owns. “From everything we’ve heard now, what Elon and Vivek are proposing to do would be something similar to what the Office of Management and Budget and GAO [Government Accountability Office] does. OMB serves the president specifically to help manage federal agencies across the executive branch. Anything that goes to the president has to go through OMB first. Anything that comes from the president to other agencies has to go through OMB first,” a former senior Trump administration official who declined to be named told Al Jazeera. Regardless, it would not be an official cabinet position, which would require the formation of a new government agency, which would require congressional approval. The most recent agency to be created was the Department of Homeland Security, which opened its doors in 2003 in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks. What is DOGE planning to do? Musk has promised to cut $2 trillion, or more than a third, of the US government’s annual budget. He said he wants to cut the number of agencies from 428 to 99 . Last week, he shared on X an old interview with Milton Friedman in which the economist lists the government departments that should be scrapped – agriculture, education, commerce – adding, “Milton Friedman was the best,” a post that is being read as things Musk would like to do. Ramaswamy, who will co-lead the office, said he wants to cut 75 percent of the federal government workforce. The federal government employs roughly 2 million civilians. A 75 percent reduction would mean that 1.5 million people would be out of a job, which, experts said, will strip down a range of services from food stamps to defence spending. To boost the effort, Trump ally and Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been picked to lead a DOGE subcommittee in the House of Representatives, in which she is to outline plans to fire government employees. The subcommittee has yet to be created. Musk has acknowledged that the move would create temporary hardships but said it is for long-term prosperity. “There are a lot of questions that are brought up by his stated goal of streamlining the government and by some of the metrics that he’s put out. [And that’s] before he’s done any of his initial analysis,” Ann Skeet, senior director of leadership ethics at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University in California, told Al Jazeera. This week, Musk singled out specific government employees, questioning their jobs to his 205 million followers on X, The Wall Street Journal reported, many of whom then followed up with tweets targeting those people. Musk has oversimplified government programmes to make them sound ridiculous and worthy of cuts but has ignored why these programmes exist. He slammed , for instance, research in which the US government spent $4.5m to spray alcoholic rats with bobcat urine. However, this is part of a bigger research study into the relationship between alcoholism and post-traumatic stress disorder, a common issue among military veterans and one the research is trying to find treatment for. Musk’s willingness to make cuts “just speaks to an arrogance that because you’ve been successful in one domain, that doesn’t mean he can be successful in another domain”, Skeet said. Musk and Ramaswamy argued that Trump will be able to cut government jobs unilaterally under a policy called Schedule F, an executive order that Trump signed during his first term and never went into effect. It would have reclassified civilian civil servants as at will employees who serve at the pleasure of the president, similar to a political appointment like a cabinet secretary. It would strip job protections from these employees. Musk has a long record of firing people who are necessary to key functions of his companies, including during his takeover of Twitter when he laid off half its employees, a move that led to systemic failures across the company. As a result of his decisions, the company is now valued at 80 percent less than when he took it over. Musk has tweeted that DOGE is looking to hire people with high IQs who are willing to work 80 hours a week for no money and will need to buy a subscription to X to apply. Skeet warned that a skeleton staff manning the federal government “will impact how consumers will interact with the government – whether or not airplanes will be safe to fly and cars will be regulated in the correct way and sort of just will people get their tax returns on time”. Musk’s appointment is until July 4, 2026, in conjunction with the country’s 250th birthday, according to a Trump team press release. That is also only a few months before midterm elections. Conflicts of interest Musk’s appointment comes with significant conflicts of interest. He has claimed on X that his businesses were “smothered by bureaucracy” and DOGE would address that. Musk’s businesses have billions of dollars in government contracts. SpaceX alone received $3.8bn in government contracts in the 2024 fiscal year, most of which was work for NASA and the Department of Defense, according to government data. Those contracts include building the propulsion systems NASA uses while another contract is to use Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service provider, to first responders during weather events like the floods in North Carolina. While SpaceX has the lion’s share of government contracts among Musk’s companies, some of his other firms also earn money from the US government, including Tesla. In the 2024 fiscal year, Tesla had $6m of government contracts. NASA and the Department of Commerce are the largest awarding agencies for the electric vehicle giant. “Having somebody who is a beneficiary of government decision-making, you know, in a role to decide which parts of government to streamline, is somebody who is fundamentally conflicted,” Skeet said. Musk’s conflicts of interest do not just stem from federal contracts but also agencies either investigating or sanctioning him and his businesses. As the co-head of this new agency, he would be in charge of coming up with financial policy decisions that could impact their future funding. One agency where Musk faces fines and investigations is the National Labor Relations Board, which investigates allegations of union busting and workforce harm. Musk faced complaints for his actions in the overhaul of Twitter, including lawsuits from employees he fired. Musk also faces a complaint lodged by the United Auto Workers union after his interview with then-candidate Trump in which the two joked about firing striking workers. That case is still open. The National Transportation Safety Board has pending investigations against Tesla on its self-driving cars, which have been involved in crashes, including one that killed a pedestrian in Arizona in 2023. Musk also has conflicts with the Department of Justice (DOJ), which has been trying to access all data and records pertaining to Trump’s X account as recently as last month as it investigates Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol by his supporters. Before the November elections, Musk was also accused of breaking federal election laws by the DOJ for a $1m daily giveaway conducted by his political action committee. In recent days, Senate Democrats have raised concerns about Musk’s calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin as early as 2022 and his sustained connections with high-level Russian officials, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. They have asked the DOJ to determine if Musk should be barred from future involvement in space contracts. There are other areas of potential conflicts. During President Joe Biden’s administration, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) awarded Starlink an $885m contract to provide access to rural America, but it was later revoked because the FCC didn’t think Starlink could provide the service. Musk slammed the decision as politically biased. Now Trump has picked Musk ally Brenden Carr to lead the commission. Carr is the top Republican on the FCC, who disagreed with the decision to deny Starlink the contract. He also wrote the chapter on the FCC in the conservative policy playbook for a second Trump term, Project 2025. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also a thorn in Musk’s side. As recently as September, the agency planned to sanction him for not showing up to testify for a second time over his acquisition of Twitter and rejected his proposal to pay a $2,923 fine for missing the deposition. But arguably, Musk’s conflicts of interest are neither unique to him nor are they new to Washington. Last year, an investigative report from the outlet Insider found that 78 members of Congress had not properly disclosed personal financial trades, which is required by law. The law is meant to combat issues like insider trading. Musk did not say whether he would divest before joining the government or serve as an outside adviser. He also did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for clarification. At the same time, some of Trump’s policies might also negatively impact Musk. “From everything that President Trump has said, it sounds like he will be very tough on China, which will then serve Elon Musk poorly. He gets a lot of his materials that he needs for his different companies from China,” the former senior Trump administration official who spoke to Al Jazeera said. Tesla, for example, reportedly gets roughly 40 percent of its materials from China. Trump’s proposed tariffs on the country could be as high as 60 percent. In case the tariffs do kick in, “I don’t think it’s all necessarily going to be good for Elon as an adviser,” the official added. Can Musk actually serve? Given all of these factors, can Musk actually serve as head of DOGE under his current arrangements with Tesla, X and SpaceX? Ethics experts suggested they should be disqualifying. “What’s happening here is problematic. Elon Musk has built-in obvious conflicts of interest because the companies that he is associated with have relationships with the very government that he is now going to come in and try to make more efficient,” Skeet said. Legal experts, however, said it’s a bit more of an open question. Advisory committees whether for a federal agency or the president fall under a specific law that requires they make public their actions and meetings so the public can participate, explained Kedric Payne, vice president, general counsel and senior director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center. But “it’s not clear that [DOGE] will fall under those transparency requirements of the law that applies to most advisory committees,” he said. That law is called the Federal Advisory Committee Act and requires that nongovernmental experts who provide federal agencies with advice publicly disclose their recommendations. Musk said on X he would do that. “In most situations where an official has a conflict of interest, there is a rule that can be enforced to stop that conflict of interest. In this situation, it is not clear yet whether or not there are any rules that could prohibit these conflicts,” Payne said. But with few specifics on how DOGE will be set up, there’s not a lot that can be said about the legal options, Payne pointed out. The Trump transition team, which did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment, has publicly said it is compliant with all laws.
Justin Herbert has thrown three touchdown passes to help the visiting Los Angeles Chargers clinch their second AFC playoff appearance in three seasons with a 40-7 victory over the New England Patriots. Saturday's win also secured the fourth postseason appearance in Jim Harbaugh's five seasons as an NFL coach, adding to the three he made during his stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Herbert finished 26 of 38 for 281 yards for the Chargers (10-6) to become the third player in NFL history with at least 3000 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes in each of his first five seasons. He joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson. Ladd McConkey had eight catches for 94 yards and pulled in TD throws of 6 and 40 yards. JK Dobbins rushed 19 times for 76 yards and a TD. The Patriots have lost six straight games, their second such losing streak of the season. They are now 2-14 the last two seasons at home. New England quarterback Drake Maye finished 12 of 22 for 117 yards and a touchdown. He became the first rookie quarterback in franchise history with a TD pass in eight straight games. But he was sacked four times, and a second-quarter fumble marked his eighth straight game with at least one turnover. Los Angeles outgained New England 428-181 for the game.PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is one of the most accessible games today. Its PS5 availability is a crucial stepping stone since Sony's PlayStation is a fan favorite. Similarly to the PC world, battle royale titles also fiercely compete against each other on the console. PUBG races against Warzone, Fortnite, and others for market share. Being accessible on PS5 is a huge deal for these titles since the console is home to one of the largest gaming communities in the world. Can you play PUBG on a PS5? Yes, PUBG is available on PS5, and players can dive into the action by downloading it directly from the PlayStation Store. The download procedure for PUBG on PS5 is simple, too, since the game is free to play. The main reason behind the confusion about PUBG's PS5 availability is how the console handles the game. PUBG runs on PS5 using the console's backward compatibility feature, which means it operates as a PS4 title. However, the battle royale classic still runs smoothly on PS5 with a stable 60 fps experience. If you've played the PC version before, though, the graphics may appear less polished due to limited customization options on consoles. How to download PUBG on PS5 To download PUBG on your PS5: Turn on your PS5 and log in to your account. Open the PlayStation Store. Use the search bar to type PUBG and select the game when it appears. Click Add to Library (since PUBG is free-to-play). After adding the game to your library, select the option to Download. Once the download and installation are complete, launch PUBG from your main screen. How big is PUBG on PS5? PUBG's file size is approximately 50 GB on PS5. The game's size is inclined to grow over time as developers continue to add new content like maps and cosmetics via updates. This is often the case for most live-service games since they intend to keep the gameplay experience fresh through events and balance changes. You should ensure that you have enough space on your console before downloading PUBG on your PS5, at least a few GBs more than the required amount. As a PS5 player, you'll also take advantage of PUBG's crossplay compatibility, allowing Xbox and PlayStation players to enjoy the game together. If you're new to the game, you can learn the ropes in PUBG's casual mode , where the competition will be dialed down so players can interact with more parts of the gameplay experience.FAIRFAX, Va. NASSAU, Bahamas — Scottie Scheffler birdied every hole but the par 3s on the front nine at Albany Golf Club on Friday and finished his bogey-free round with an 8-under 64 that gave him a two-shot lead in the Hero World Challenge. Two months off did nothing to slow the world's No. 1 player. Scheffler already has eight victories this year and is in position to get another before the end of the year. Scheffler was at 13-under 131, two ahead of Akshay Bhatia (66) and Justin Thomas (67), both of whom had to save par on the 18th hole to stay in range going into the weekend. Scheffler started with a lob wedge to 2 feet for birdie and never slowed until after he went out in 29 to seize control of the holiday tournament against a 20-man field. Scheffler cooled slightly on the back nine, except it didn't feel that way to him. "Front nine, just things were going my way. Back nine, maybe not as much," Scheffler said. "A couple shots could end up closer to the hole, a couple putts go in, just little things." Asked if he felt any frustration he didn't take it lower — he once shot 59 at the TPC Boston during the FedEx Cup playoffs — Scheffler sounded bemused. "I think in this game I think a lot of all y'all are looking for perfection out of us," he said. "Today I shot 8 under on the golf course, not something I hang my head about. A lot of good things out there — clean card, bogey-free, eight birdies. Overall, I think I'm pretty pleased." Thomas felt his 67 was stress-free, particularly the way he was driving the ball. The wind laid down again, rare for the Bahamas, though it is expected to pick up on the weekend. Thomas wasn't concerned to see Scheffler get off to a hot start, especially with three par 5s on the front nine and a short par 4 that at worst leaves a flip wedge to the green. "You literally can birdie every hole as soft as the greens are," Thomas said. "He's a great player, a great wedge player, and you have a lot of birdie holes to start. I'm honestly surprised he only shot 8 under. It's a sneaky course because if you fall asleep on some shots, you can get out of position. But if you're on and focused and really in control of everything — like these last two days with no wind — you can just make so many birdies." Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley had a 67 and was four shots behind. No matter how benign the conditions, it wasn't always easy. Cameron Young, who opened with a 64 for a two-shot lead, followed with a 75 despite making five birdies. That included a double bogey on the final hole when his approach tumbled down the bank into the rocks framing the lake that goes all the way down the 18th hole. Patrick Cantlay was trying to keep pace playing alongside Scheffler, but he had three bogeys over the final seven holes and fell seven shots behind with a 71. The tournament, hosted by Tiger Woods, is unofficial but offers world ranking points to all but the bottom three players because of the small field. It's the weakest field in 25 years, but Scheffler at No. 1 gives it enough cachet. He is the first player since Woods in 2009 to start and finish a year at No. 1 in the world. And even after a layoff — giving him time to tinker with a new putting stroke — it looks like it might be a while before anyone changes that. NEW YORK (AP) — There's no place like home for the holidays. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. In the wake of the very contentious and divisive 2024 presidential election, the upcoming celebration of Thanksgiving and the ramp-up of the winter holiday season could be a boon for some — a respite from the events of the larger world in the gathering of family and loved ones. Hours and even days spent with people who have played the largest roles in our lives. Another chapter in a lifetime of memories. That's one scenario. For others, that same period — particularly because of the polarizing presidential campaign — is something to dread. There is the likelihood of disagreements, harsh words, hurt feelings and raised voices looming large. Those who make a study of people and their relationships to each other in an increasingly complex 21st-century say there are choices that those with potentially fraught personal situations can make — things to do and things to avoid — that could help them and their families get through this time with a minimum of open conflict and a chance at getting to the point of the holidays in the first place. For those who feel strongly about the election's outcome, and know that the people they would be spending the holiday feel just as strongly in the other direction, take the time to honestly assess if you're ready to spend time together in THIS moment, barely a few weeks after Election Day — and a time when feelings are still running high. The answer might be that you're not, and it might be better to take a temporary break, says Justin Jones-Fosu, author of “I Respectfully Disagree: How to Have Difficult Conversations in a Divided World.” “You have to assess your own readiness,” he says, “Each person is going be very different in this.” He emphasizes that it's not about taking a permanent step back. “Right now is that moment that we’re talking about because it’s still so fresh. Christmas may be different.” Keep focused on why why you decided to go in the first place, Jones-Fosu says. Maybe it’s because there’s a relative there you don’t get to see often, or a loved one is getting up in age, or your kids want to see their cousins. Keeping that reason in mind could help you get through the time. If you decide getting together is the way to go, but you know politics is still a dicey subject, set a goal of making the holiday a politics-free zone and stick with it, says Karl Pillemer, a professor at Cornell University whose work includes research on family estrangement. “Will a political conversation change anyone’s mind?" he says. “If there is no possibility of changing anyone’s mind, then create a demilitarized zone and don’t talk about it.” Let’s be honest. Sometimes, despite best efforts and intentions to keep the holiday gathering politics- and drama-free, there’s someone who’s got something to say and is going to say it. In that case, avoid getting drawn into it, says Tracy Hutchinson, a professor in the graduate clinical mental health counseling program at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. “Not to take the hook is one of the most important things, and it is challenging,” she says. After all, you don’t have to go to every argument you’re invited to. If you risk getting caught up in the moment, consider engaging in what Pillemer calls “forward mapping.” This involves thinking medium and long term rather than just about right now — strategy rather than tactics. Maybe imagine yourself six months from now looking back on the dinner and thinking about the memories you'd want to have. “Think about how you would like to remember this holiday,” he says. “Do you want to remember it with your brother and sister-in-law storming out and going home because you’ve had a two-hour argument?” Things getting intense? Defuse the situation. Walk away. And it doesn't have to be in a huff. Sometimes a calm and collected time out is just what you — and the family — might need. Says Hutchinson: “If they do start to do something like that, you could say, `I’ve got to make this phone call. I’ve got to go to the bathroom. I’m going to take a walk around the block.'"HONG KONG: The United States Justice Department’s criminal charges against Gautam Adani pose the biggest threat yet to the Asian tycoon’s US$169 billion empire. More importantly, though, it’s also a missed opportunity for India’s opposition, an unexpected gift to president-elect Donald Trump, and an all-around embarrassment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 54-page indictment alleges that Adani Green Energy’s mega 2020 order from Solar Energy Corporation of India had a problem - there were no takers for the expensive power, which jeopardised the lucrative contract. That, the DOJ says, gave rise to a corrupt scheme “to pay over US$250 million in bribes to Indian government officials, to lie to investors and banks to raise billions of dollars, and to obstruct justice”. The case is against group chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar, who is executive director of the green energy business, and six other individuals. The conglomerate denied the allegations as baseless and said it’s fully compliant with all laws. “All possible legal recourse will be sought,” the group said in a statement. TOO LATE TO SWAY MAHARASHTRA ELECTION The news about the court filing came hours after the end of assembly elections in the western state of Maharashtra, home to India’s financial capital Mumbai. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi had made crony capitalism - especially Adani’s proximity to Modi - the central piece of his campaign, particularly in the Maharashtra poll. Which is what makes the timing of these charges unfortunate for him. Adani, who owns the two Mumbai airports and supplies electricity to the city, will soon start redeveloping its biggest shantytown. Gandhi and his allies have alleged that the terms of the controversial US$3 billion project were sweetened for Adani by the state government, which is controlled by Modi’s party. Neither Adani nor Modi has responded to the allegations. A change in the local administration might lead to a fresh tender. The outcome of the Maharashtra vote is already sealed. Votes will be counted Saturday (Nov 23), though exit polls suggest that Gandhi’s challenge to dislodge the government probably failed in a close contest. For Trump, though, the indictment couldn’t have come at a better time. His incoming administration will bargain with India for greater market access, especially for US tech firms, from a position of strength. GRAVE CHARGES AGAINST ASIA'S SECOND-RICHEST MAN The Adani Group is yet to comment on the charges, although an early settlement would allow the sprawling conglomerate to continue to access its most-important raw material: Debt financing. Adani’s stocks and bonds are already tumbling. For bankers to take an Adani loan file to the risk committee, the overhang of criminal charges against Gautam and Sagar, who’s part of an elaborate succession plan, must first go away. This is also what Modi will want. The indictment is the biggest blowback against him yet from the ever-expanding corporate-governance saga that has engulfed the infrastructure behemoth. Adani is the prime minister’s longtime friend, and neither Modi’s government nor the ruling party shied away when New York-based Hindenburg Research accused Asia’s second-richest man of “pulling the largest con in corporate history” in January last year. That turned out to be a manageable crisis. The group strenuously denied the short seller’s allegations of stock manipulation and accounting fraud, and the storm appeared to blow over. The conglomerate’s market value doubled from the low it hit in February 2023 , following a US$150 billion-plus selloff. By comparison, the DOJ’s charges are grave. The indictment alleges that Indian state governments weren’t too keen to buy 12 gigawatts - eight from Adani and four from US-listed Azure Power - of what they perceived to be expensive power. According to the court filing, Gautam and Sagar Adani and Ranjit Gupta, the then chief executive of Azure, among others, “devised a scheme to offer, authorise, make and promise to make bribe payments” to government officials in India so they would be persuaded to purchase the electricity. The two groups worked out their respective shares of the bribes, the DOJ noted. Adani and its officers allegedly “relied on the US financial system to perpetuate this fraudulent scheme”. They did this by seeking and securing investors and potential investors physically located in the US and causing wires to be sent and received that passed through New York, the indictment said. POTENTIAL FOR A FULL-BLOWN DOMESTIC SCANDAL The echoes of the case will reverberate through India. So far it’s mostly Gandhi pounding the tables. For regional opposition leaders, Adani’s link with Modi hasn’t exactly been a hot-button issue. That was also the case when in a fresh report in August, Hindenburg alleged that Madhabi Puri Buch, head of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), had a potential conflict of interest, raising doubts about the objectivity of SEBI’s ongoing probe into Adani. Buch and the regulator denied the accusations, and the SEBI chief skipped a scheduled appearance before a lawmakers’ committee in October. But the fresh US charges change everything. The indictment alleges that Adani has concealed the “bribery scheme” from investors and financial investors since at least March last year, when Federal Bureau of Investigation agents served Sagar with a search warrant in the US. While concepts like conflicts of interest - or alleged breaches of securities law - require a modicum of financial training, bribery is something every politician understands. Almost US$228 million, the DOJ says, was offered to just one person, identified in the court filing as Foreign Official #1 from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. There’s plenty here for a full-blown domestic scandal. If this affair drags out, Modi’s own Bharatiya Janata Party may wonder how long it should support a prime minister who at 74 is unlikely to lead it to the 2029 election. In other words, Gandhi’s intuition to stick to the alleged Modi-Adani nexus as a talking point in election campaigns may have been vindicated. In a press conference Thursday, the Congress Party leader called for Buch’s removal and Adani’s arrest. While the DOJ indictment came too late to sway the vote in Maharashtra, it may yet cast a long shadow - both on India’s national politics, and relations with Washington next year.

So you're gathering with relatives whose politics are different. Here are some tips for the holidaysShould a cherished children’s tradition be interrupted by the conflicts of adults? The Burlington Public Library has decided that it should not. In the month of November 2024, the Burlington Public Library announced on their website that they will be continuing their Letters to Santa program despite the nationwide Canada Post strike that has been ongoing since November 15, 2024. Each of the six library branches in Burlington has put out a special red mailbox for this purpose. Families, as an enjoyable Christmas-themed activity this holiday season, are invited to bring their children to any of the libraries to get the task of letter-writing done. Children will be offered letter templates and pens and pencils so they can write to Santa Claus at the North Pole, report on their good behaviour throughout the year, and request a special list of gifts. The Burlington Public Library has taken measures to ensure children receiving a reply doesn’t depend on Canadian national politics. “At present, we are continuing to mail the letters in the hope that an agreement will be reached, ending the strike. While less magical, we do have a backup plan in case the postal strike continues,” says Krista Schwab, marketing and communications manager at the Burlington Public Library. “BPL will offer the option for parents and caregivers to stop by a branch and pick up a non-personalized response letter so that kids can receive a reply before the holidays. We will communicate this option if we need to act on it.” A letter to Santa is children’s literature that actually comes directly from the hands of children. Since the Victorian age, with the rise of Christmas as a cultural phenomenon in the West, children have voluntarily composed letters to the jolly bearded man in red as a means for practicing their alphabet and getting their voices heard by an adult with the power to grant them what they want. It can even be argued that a letter to Santa is a budding writer’s first persuasive essay. They have to convince Santa that they’ve earned the presents they’re asking for, with a year’s worth of general good conduct. It is a treasured activity in a child’s education. “While the focus of the Letters to Santa campaign is to inspire joy and to build a sense of community, writing these letters, whether by a child or with their caregiver, supports early literacy skills by helping children recognize the sounds and meanings of letters and words,” says Schwab on how writing a letter to Santa Claus impacts a child’s developing literacy. Letter writing has become something of an obsolete skill as the educational system transitions to teaching students more digital means of communication. There are resources for parents to consider if their children are having difficulty approaching how to write a letter, and the solution itself can be digital. Parents and children can go online for instructional material or even consult YouTube tutorials on how to write a letter to Santa. The Burlington Public Library has public computers that can be accessed with a library card. Unlike the Letters to Santa program, several library services have been suspended due to the library’s inability to receive or distribute mail. Interlibrary loans, physical copies of new issues of magazines, and mailed customer notices will not be available for the duration of the strike. Letters to Santa envelopes can be dropped off at any of the following library branches: Aldershot, Alton, Brant Hills, Central, New Appleby, and Tansley Woods. Letters will be accepted until December 5, 2024.
